International needing help

Postby kdexter97 on Thu Dec 06, 2007 2:35 pm

I'm an international student from Thailand going to college in the US. I have some questions to ask you. I would like to confirm my understanding of credit cars for international students. I don't have SSN so this means that I can’t apply for any credit cards, right? Do you know of any way I could get a credit at a US bank to use at school?

I looked into this and I believe you need to be a US citizen to qualify for an American credit card. I'm not sure but I know American Express is fairly international and it’s a charge card meaning it has to be paid back every month and so you might want to check with them. As far as international students being able to have a credit card for emergencies, this is a great question and we've heard it before. To be completely honest I've been looking into this and have not found a good solution. If anybody else reads this and know of one let us know. In the meantime I'll keep searching.

Student Platinum can help educate you about the US credit system and also help anybody to become smarter about paying debts and managing their financial responsibilities. The student credit cards offered on the website do require a US social security number and so unfortunately many international students can't get them. My lone suggestion for a credit card for international students would be to look into a debit card or pre=paid credit card. In both cases you must have a bank account with a US banks and then you can work with the bank to get a card which can be used exactly like a credit card in all the same locations except it uses money in your bank account.

Where can you get extra money to put in that bank account? Funny you should ask :D

I also work on http://www.ScholarshipPoints.com. Scholarship Points is a website that offer both US citizens and international students studying in the US free college scholarships! They give away $1,000 every month and $10,000 a couple of time per year. If you want extra money for college, free college scholarships or are looking for scholarship contests you should register there. Its free!
